In order to help our customers understand how interpretation systems work, we developed a simple acronym to explain the four (4) basic types of equipment and how they’re used in any size meeting, or for any size organization.
We call this PMTR which stands for: Presentation, Monitoring Transmission and Reception
P = Presentation
The presenter speaks into a microphone, which is connected, to a PA system to amplify their voice so those in
attendance may hear clearly - that’s Presentation equipment.
M = Monitoring
Monitoring is the most important piece of equipment to ensure your interpreter can hear the presenter completely
and accurately.
Simply put, Monitoring is the ability to tap into the PA system in such a way that the interpreter receives a feed of
the presenter’s voice directly into their headsets.
As you may know, interpreting requires a lot of concentration as the interpreters have to be listening while they are
speaking. This means that the interpreter's voice is always their biggest distraction, as such, proper monitoring is
key for interpretation.
By providing effective Monitoring of the presenter's voice directly into the interpreter’s headset the interpreter
is able to hear better and concentrate better, which means they can do a better job of interpreting.
T = Transmission
Transmission is the easy part, the interpreter’s microphone is connected to a transmitter which broadcasts their
voice via a wireless signal into the room.
R= Reception
Each audience member has their own receiver with a headset and they select the channel to listen to their speific language.
